Glider Proofing Your Playroom: Tips and Hints

I’ve had the unfortunate experience of loosing a glider because their room was not “glider proofed." I would like to go over some steps to keep your glider safe during an excursion out of their cages.

**Make sure that your outlets are covered. You can purchase outlet covers at Wal-Mart or any super center relatively cheap.

**Make sure that there is no food or drink in the room that is not intended for your gliders.

**Make sure that the gaps between the door and floor is sealed. Using a towel is not always the best decision as they can move it. I would recommend a permanent foot plate which can also be found at Wal-Mart.

**In my glider room I have 4 cages, so letting a pair out to roam the room isn’t really in their best interest. I recommend a tent. They are portable and are well worth the money. However, if you still would like to give the gliders run of the room, make sure that you cover the other cages with a sheet so that they can’t fight through the cage wires.

**Make sure there isn’t anything hazardous that a glider could hurt themselves on such as sharp objects or things small enough to ingest.

**Make sure you dust and vacuum often so your gliders do not inhale something they shouldn’t.

**Never ever allow your glider to play in the room unattended. They can and will get into EVERYTHING.

**If you have forced hot air and have vents in the room… make sure you cover the vents with wire screening to keep them from slipping inside

**If you're going to chose to use the bathroom during play time. Make sure that the toilet seat is down and you're always in attendance. It only takes a second for a glider to slip in and drown. Better safe then sorry, and try the tent instead.

These are only a few of the items that can ensure your gliders safety and more precautions can be researched for more suggestions. I opted for the pop-tent (got it at Wal-Mart for $20.00) because I’m always afraid I missed something while proofing. If you need more information or help with glider proofing please post in the Housing section of the GA forums. Happy Gliding and have fun.
