How to be a Responsible Glider OwnerWritten by: TMarie - GA Owner/Admin
Download a printable version here So you think you are ready to be a glider owner? Is it because after just one look at those adorable eyes you are hooked? Is it because you heard they will bond with you so well that they are almost your best friend? These are the same reasons many choose to have sugar gliders. However, this does not necessarily mean you are ready for a glider. Sugar gliders are exotic animals. This means they are not the same as your average cat or dog that is a common animal where there is a lot of general knowledge already known. Knowledge is a key in being a responsible owner or any animal, especially a sugar glider. Time commitment is one huge factor. Since sugar gliders are wild animals they are not easily tamed. It takes a lot of effort at the beginning especially to bond and tame your sugar glider. You should plan on spending at least one hour a day bonding with your glider while they are sleeping. This is usually increased for the first few months you own your glider. Playtime is equally important. Plan to spend another hour at night when they are awake playing with them outside of their cage. If you want your glider to be your best friend, this is essential. Vet care is another essential and not just any vet either. If you are planning on having a sugar glider, plan on finding a vet who treats exotics and is comfortable treating gliders. Also plan on taking your gliders to the vet at least once a year (twice a year is preferred) and having a general exam done and also have fecal tests performed. The average cost for a glider visit is generally around $35 per glider. Diet is another very important point that needs to be made. Some things that gliders eat in captivity can be found in stores, but not all. They can’t just live on a hard pelleted food like dogs and cats either. There is no pelleted food to date that offers a glider a complete diet. Also, gliders are sap suckers so dry, hard pelleted food can be dangerous and even fatal to gliders. If you are sure you have all of these factors under control, you are ready to be a wonderful new owner of a sugar glider. All of these factors have time and money in common. If you can handle the special care they require, sugar gliders will be the best pet you have ever had. |
