As we all know gliders can be very vocal. They make many sounds. A lot of times we wonder what these sounds mean. I have put the most common sounds you will hear together and some of the meanings.

Barking: Sounds like a small dog's short bark. This usually means they are talking to other gliders, or something has spooked them. Unless your gliders are like mine and they bark just to see who can get me out of bed first.

Sneezing: I have heard this sound from my pairs at feeding or treat time. With my gliders this means "mine leave it alone". It can also mean they are cleaning themselves. It sounds just like a little sneeze.

Hissing: Adult gliders will make this sound if in distress. They will also make this sound if having problems going to the potty. And Joeys will make this sound if hungry. It sounds like a snake hissing in small spurts.

Crabbing: This is the loudest and most scary sound a glider will make. You will hear this when waking a glider sometimes till they see and smell it's you. It sounds like a locust or some people say it sounds like an electric pencil sharpener.
My gliders have body language that goes along with the crabbing...
1) crab with one hand in air=leave me alone.
2) crab standing on hind legs=watch out!!
3) crab standing on hind legs and both hands in air=come any closer and I will have your hand for dinner.

Chattering: Gliders usually make this sound when they are excited or very happy. My gliders make this sound of the mornings when I talk to them. This sounds like a squirrel chatter.

Purr: This sound is very soft and hard to hear unless you have the glider very close to you. This is a sound of contentment. It sounds much like the purr of a small kitten.

Crying: This sound is heard from Joeys or gliders that have just went to their new home and they are crying for their mom/dad. To me this sounds like a low crab with a hiss mixed in it.

Singing: The female will sing to her Joeys while they are in pouch. The female makes a soft rhythmic sound that actually carries a tune and changes in pitch.

Fighting/Mating: I list these sounds together because they sound so much alike.

Mating: A male and female will make this sound during mating it sounds like a crabby hissy/whine.

Fighting: Gliders make the same sound when fighting. When it is fighting, it is usually louder and more constant.

Once you know your gliders you will be able to tell the difference between the two sounds.

SHH-SHH: This is a sound the female makes when the joeys come out of pouch and when the female is trying to get the joeys to stop nursing so she can go and eat. It sounds like she is saying SHHH but in small little spurts.

Self-Mutilation: I have never heard this sound first hand. Pocket Angel was able to get this very disturbing sound on tape. It is a cross between a cry and a crab. Unlike any other sound a glider will make. Everyone that has heard this sound says you will know it when you hear it. Here is the link to Jess' post of the SM sound.
